One community. One mission. 150,000 items to fight food insecurity.

Officials and students from ¹ú²úÂ×Àí and Norfolk Public Schools stand behind table in cafeteria kitchen with donated canned goods on top.

Monarchs Give Back is a University-wide campaign that brings the ¹ú²úÂ×Àí community together to address food insecurity in Hampton Roads. Since launching in Fall 2022 as part of President Brian O. Hemphill, Ph.D.’s inauguration, this collective effort has provided more than 225,000 food items to support Norfolk Public Schools students and ¹ú²úÂ×Àí students through the Monarch Pantry.

In 2026, we’re setting our most ambitious goal yet — and we need every Monarch to help make it happen.

Monarchs Give Back

The 150,000 Item Challenge

During the 2026 Forward-Focused event, President Hemphill issued a bold call to action: collect 150,000 canned goods or monetary donations to support families facing food insecurity.

This goal represents a 50,000-item increase from last year — and reflects the growing need in our community. By launching earlier and expanding opportunities to give, Monarch Nation is rising to meet the moment.

Together, we can make a lasting impact — one item at a time.

Our Impact

Through the power of collective action, Monarchs Give Back has already delivered more than 225,000 food items to those in need.

Donations support:

  • Students at ¹ú²úÂ×Àí through the Monarch Pantry
  • Families served by Norfolk Public Schools

Every contribution helps ensure that members of our community have access to the food they need to thrive.

Ways to Give

There are many ways to support Monarchs Give Back 2026:

  • Donate non-perishable food items at campus events and collection sites
  • Shop the Monarch Pantry Amazon Wishlist and ship items directly
  • Make a monetary donation through ¹ú²úÂ×Àí’s giving portal
  • Participate in campus events and bring donations to attend

Every item and every dollar makes a difference.

Student Move-Out

As students prepare to move out for the semester, Housing & Residence Life has placed 13 donation boxes in residence hall lobbies across campus, making it easy for Monarchs to place items in a convenient space within their own community. The boxes will help collect non-perishable food items to support those in need. Boxes will be available from May 1 through May 15. We encourage residents to give back before heading home and help make a positive impact in the Monarch community.
