Fellows train in a tertiary care pediatric emergency department at , Virginia’s only freestanding children’s hospital. The emergency department cares for approximately 65,000 pediatric patients annually and serves a diverse patient population across the Hampton Roads region and beyond. Fellows graduate with extensive experience managing both common pediatric illnesses and high-acuity emergencies in a collaborative academic environment.

Point-of-care ultrasound is a major strength of our fellowship program. Fellows receive longitudinal ultrasound education throughout all three years of training with direct mentorship from fellowship-trained ultrasound faculty. Fellows receive comprehensive longitudinal ultrasound training throughout fellowship, including dedicated ultrasound bootcamps, monthly scanning shifts, and hands-on bedside procedural ultrasound instruction. Fellows gain substantial hands-on experience performing and interpreting pediatric emergency ultrasound examinations and graduate with strong procedural and diagnostic ultrasound skills.

Yes. Fellows interested in global health may participate in international clinical electives, medical mission experiences, and global health educational opportunities during fellowship training. Our faculty maintain active partnerships with organizations including Operation Smile and Physicians for Peace, along with additional international pediatric outreach initiatives that provide fellows opportunities to participate in global health experiences, humanitarian medicine, and care for underserved populations worldwide. Fellows may also pursue a Certificate in Global Health through affiliated academic programs. The fellowship supports residents interested in developing careers in global emergency medicine, medical education, and underserved care.

Absolutely. Fellows have the opportunity to pursue additional academic training and professional development during fellowship. Fellows have access to a variety of advanced academic and professional development opportunities during training, including Master’s degree programs, graduate certificates, medical education training, global health certification, advanced ultrasound education, and research and quality improvement training. Flexible online coursework options allow fellows to pursue these interests while balancing their clinical and academic responsibilities throughout fellowship.

Fellows work closely with experienced faculty mentors to develop individualized scholarly projects aligned with their career goals. Fellows receive extensive research support throughout fellowship, including dedicated faculty mentorship, access to biostatistical support, and opportunities to participate in quality improvement and educational scholarship projects. Additional support is provided for presentation preparation and manuscript development, helping fellows successfully disseminate their work. Fellows regularly present at regional and national conferences and are strongly encouraged to publish scholarly work during fellowship training.

Our graduates are exceptionally well prepared for leadership roles in Pediatric Emergency Medicine programs and healthcare systems nationwide.

Our fellowship provides a comprehensive and structured didactic curriculum designed to support both clinical excellence and board preparation. Fellows participate in weekly Thursday morning educational conferences that include faculty-led lectures, interactive case discussions, board review sessions, and  simulation training. The curriculum emphasizes high-yield Pediatric Emergency Medicine content, evidence-based practice, procedural education, and resuscitation training. In addition, fellows participate in dedicated ultrasound courses and hands-on simulation experiences throughout fellowship to strengthen procedural, diagnostic, and critical care skills in a supportive learning environment. Faculty mentorship and individualized teaching help fellows prepare for successful careers in Pediatric Emergency Medicine and board certification.

Fellows during Pediatric Emergency medicine blocks typically work approximately 14–15 clinical shifts per month, with most shifts scheduled as 8-hour shifts. The schedule is designed to provide broad exposure to pediatric emergency medicine while maintaining a strong emphasis on education, wellness, and work-life balance. Clinical responsibilities are balanced with protected time for didactics, simulation, ultrasound training, research, and scholarly activities throughout fellowship.

In addition to core Pediatric Emergency Medicine clinical training, fellows participate in a wide variety of specialized rotations and educational experiences designed to provide comprehensive exposure to the breadth of emergency care. These experiences include Adult Emergency Medicine, trauma, medical toxicology, sports medicine, orthopedics, transport medicine, EMS, child abuse pediatrics, procedural sedation, and dedicated ultrasound training, including an ultrasound bootcamp experience. These rotations allow fellows to develop expertise in the evaluation and management of critically ill and injured patients across diverse clinical settings while strengthening procedural, diagnostic, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.
