Jamie Robertson is an American artist, educator, and creative professional with a decade of experience in academia and arts administration. Robertson earned an MFA in Studio Art with a concentration in Photography and Digital Media from the University of Houston (2020), an MS in Art Therapy from Florida State University (2014), and a BA in Art from the University of Houston (2012). Her journey in the arts began as Outreach Coordinator for the Houston Center for Photography, where she utilized her skills in art therapy to develop, revive, and lead community arts-based programs, such as Collaborations and Girls Own Stories. Her education in art therapy and passion for community art education enabled her to work with various organizations in Houston, including Art League Houston and Houston Methodist Hospital. In addition, these skills allowed her to transition to higher education, where she worked previously as a Lecturer at Sam Houston State University.

As an artist, Robertson views her creative practice of photography and video as an entanglement of memory, language, and ecology. Her works explore the environment of the American South and its relationship to Blackness through Black Feminist Hauntological and Eco-Womanist lens; frameworks that emphasize the history of the South is haunted by memory in addition to honoring the land and Black women鈥檚 relationship to it. Oscillating between analog and digital processes, Robertson utilizes text, archival images, and found imagery as materials and companions to her work to oppose the hierarchy of high and low culture. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in numerous group and solo exhibitions at institutions such as the Exposure Photography Festival in Alberta, Canada. She has received multiple grants and fellowships, most recently through The Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University and the Elizabeth River Project. Her work has been featured in Burnaway, Glasstire, Flat Files, and Fraction Magazine. Robertson has published two photographic books, Charting the Afriscape of Leon County, Texas, and alligatorwatergreen with Fifth Wheel Press and National Monument Press, respectively. Her work is held in both public and private collections. Currently, her works explore the use of black and white infrared film as a poetic means of seeing beyond human sight, revealing the 鈥渟pectral鈥 presence that haunts the Southern landscape. Jamie Robertson lives and works in Hampton Roads, VA.
